Donald Trump signe le décret concernant Facebook et Twitter

Le président américain, très actif sur Twitter, est furieux depuis le signalement de deux de ses messages estampillés « trompeurs »

Ulcéré par l’attitude de Twitter à son égard, Donald Trump a signé ce jeudi un décret visant à limiter la protection des réseaux sociaux et la latitude dont ils bénéficient dans la modération de leurs contenus.

« Nous sommes ici pour défendre la liberté d’expression face à un des pires dangers qui soit », a déclaré le président américain dans le Bureau ovale, en référence à ce qu’il a appelé le « monopole » des géants des technologies.

« Ils ont le pouvoir non contrôlé de censurer, éditer, dissimuler ou modifier toute forme de communication entre des individus et de larges audiences publiques », a-t-il élaboré en signant le décret qui devrait être le point de départ d’une longue bataille en justice.

Très actif sur Twitter où il mêle, à un rythme effréné, annonces politiques, attaques personnelles, théories du complot et propos de campagne, le locataire de la Maison-Blanche dénonce de longue date ce qu’il estime être un biais idéologique et politique de la part des géants de la Silicon Valley. « Nous ne pouvons laisser cela se poursuivre, c’est très très injuste », a-t-il martelé.

Le décret est censé donner la possibilité de réguler la célèbre section 230 du « Communications Decency Act », une loi de 1996, pilier du fonctionnement des plateformes numériques. Elle offre à Facebook, Twitter, YouTube ou Google une immunité contre toute poursuite judiciaire liée aux contenus publiés par des tiers et leur donne la liberté d’intervenir sur les plateformes à leur guise.

Le décret modifierait le champ d’application de cette loi et permettrait aux autorités de régulation de se prononcer sur les politiques de modération des contenus.

L’ancien homme d’affaires accuse Twitter de prendre « des décisions éditoriales » et de faire preuve « d’activisme politique » dans le choix des messages qu’il décide de soumettre à vérification. Ses détracteurs estiment que le président n’agit pas au nom de la liberté d’expression mais de son propre intérêt.
